Several enhancements streamlines installation, development, management and overall usability of Enonic Vertical Site. A partial list of some of these enhancements is outlined below:
The most complete database and application server support available
Enonic is determined to enable Vertical Site to fit into most hosting environments. Our secret behind this objective is the exclusive use of open standards and smart technology that ensures a minimal number of changes to support new application servers and databases as they become available.
To showcase this Vertical Site now supports the following Java application servers:
- IBM Websphere application server
- Oracle application server
- Bea Weblogic
- JBOSS
- SUN application server (New in 4.1)
- Tomcat (New in 4.1)
In addition to a broad range of databases including:
- IBM DB2
- Oracle database
- Microsoft SQL Server
- PostgreSQL
- MySQL (New in 4.1)
- Derby (JavaDB) (New in 4.1)
Flexible integration with third party portals
Vertical Site 4.1 includes a portlet for swift and hassle free integration between Vertical Site and JSR-168 portals. This being said, the biggest new feature enables you to use Vertical Site as the main portal and plug-in portlets from third party vendors including IBM, Oracle, BEA, SUN and JBOSS. This is handled by Web Services and Enonic’s adherence to the WSRP standard.
WSRP-technology opens up new possibilities by enabling your websites to be driven by a CMS, even though you want to use portlets for your application development. Previously this was handled by creating a hybrid solution where the portal framework was customized to handle the website and the CMS content was integrated. This created a solution that is expensive and challenging to maintain.
Enonic is one of the first CMS vendors to offer this latest technology in a CMS and open for new solutions where a CMS and a portal can keep their respective responsibilities allowing the customer to obtain the best overall solution combined from each of these approaches.
Extended API for developers
Enonic’s API has been improved and is now available through Java RPC, Web Services (SOAP) and Enonic’s XSLT framework.
The API is also pluggable. This enables developers to create new functions that are automatically exposed Vertical Sites XSLT portal. These new functions can for instance be business logic consisting of several standard API methods or integrations with other systems or databases.
New cache engine
Enonic’s new cache engine is based on an open standard solution that offers better scalability and performance. This allows you to configure cache replication for a cluster or share a cache between websites.
Enonic uses the Spring Framework
The Spring Framework is a light weight framework for application development using Java/J2EE. Spring makes it easier to develop applications using J2EE and promotes best practice programming.
Spring’s functionality can be used in conjunction with all J2EE application servers. This framework is open source and free of charge.
Several of Enonic’s partners use this framework as a key component in their development.
User-friendly URLs
The new URLs produced by Vertical Site are based on a named path for each menu item. This gives you readable links, increased search engine visibility and simpler configuration of site statistics using Web Trends or similar solutions.
New sample site
The new version includes upgraded templates and best practice examples. This offers a good jump for developers who want to get started quickly.
The new version will be available for download as the Enonic demo-kit. This download will run without installation and includes the new sample site together with sample content. It is a perfect way to build up Vertical Site experience quickly and easily.
While we are announcing the release of Enonic Vertical Site 4.1, Enonic has already started the development of version 4.2. This version will continue to focus on the user experience and deliver best-of-breed CMS features.
