Norwegian Top Football Engages 1 Million Fans with Push
NTF is using push notifications to connect fans with their favorite clubs—without relying on costly apps or SMS. Here’s how they built a powerful, flexible system using Enonic and PWAs.
How can football clubs stay connected with their fans in a world full of apps, news, and social media? For Norwegian Top Football (Norsk Toppfotball), the answer is clear: push notifications – delivered through a flexible and cost-effective solution built on Enonic.
At a recent Enonic Meetup, Media and IT Director Thomas Torjusen shared how they’ve embraced progressive web apps (PWAs) and push notifications to reach over 1.6 million registered users across Eliteserien, OBOS-ligaen, and more than 40 club websites.

One System, Many Clubs, Many Fans
Norwegian Top Football represents the 32 top clubs in Norway and runs a shared digital platform offering scale, efficiency, and powerful tools. Built with 99X and powered by Enonic, the platform handled over 36 million page views last year.
With PWA technology, clubs no longer need to manage native apps. All functionality is available across desktop, mobile, and tablet – with a consistent experience and push notifications that work independently of App Store and Google Play.
Where SMS campaigns can cost tens of thousands, push notifications are free – and just as effective. Whether it’s match updates, fantasy league tips, ticket info, or news, clubs can reach their audience with just a few clicks.
The push system is fully integrated into Enonic:
Editors create messages directly in Content Studio
Notifications are sent via Firebase
Stats and open rates appear on a built-in dashboard
Users can easily opt in or out
During the talk, Thomas sent out a live push notification to fans – written with the help of AI (nicknamed C-3PO) and published in seconds.
Automated and Personalized Messaging
But they’re not stopping there. Norwegian Top Football is working on:
Consent-based notifications, where users choose what they want to receive
Live match updates – goals, halftime, final results
Data integration with the sports federation’s login system – for better segmentation
Push notifications as a fan recruitment tool for match attendance and engagement
All data is handled securely and in line with GDPR. The goal? Make it easy for fans to stay connected – and for clubs to communicate effectively, without extra cost.
A Solution for the Whole Football Family
This push system isn’t just for the Eliteserien – it’s available to every club in the network. When a new feature is developed for one, it’s rolled out to all. That means even smaller clubs can offer professional, app-like experiences without building anything themselves.
“You might change partner or underwear – but never your team,” Thomas joked. With push notifications, fans will never miss a beat when it comes to their club.
